Should I switch out my guitar's pickups?

I've been dieing to get a fender strat, but they are just so expensive. But I've been thinking about buying a reeaally cheap squire strat (like $120) then buying some fender pickups and just swapping them out. Would I still get a sound close to or as good as a fender strat? Or is it just a bad idea (I would pay about $350 for the entire thing)
