Is it appropriate to let an American Mastiff sleep outdoors?

My dad is planning to get one. My mom doesn't want it stay indoors because she's afraid that the dog might scratch the floor and bite the furniture. I heard they can stay indoors but I'm not sure if they can sleep outdoors.
